Lake County Scrap Tire Collection

The timing of this collection serves a dual purpose.  Not only does it allow residents to free up space and discard used or unwanted tires, but it also serves an important health benefit.  According to Bert Mechenbier, Mosquito Control Supervisor at the Lake County General Health District, “the main vector of the West Nile virus and other mosquito-born diseases likes to breed in old tires that collect rain water; as a result, getting rid of old tires that may potentially collect rain water early in the season is a smart move to avoid a breeding ground for mosquitoes.”

There is no cost to bring up to six tires without rims attached, and every additional tire without rims attached is $2 each.  For each tire with rims, there is a $4 charge and there is a $10 charge for oversize tires like those on farm tractors.  Last year, 583 vehicles brought 40.9 tons of tires to the event to be recycled.
