The program will be Vernice Jackson: Portraying Sally Hemings.  Vernice is an actress from Women In History who will portray Hemings, an enslaved African American, property of Thomas Jefferson, who sacrificed her freedom for the love of her children.  Sally Hemings was the personal servant to Thomas Jefferson’s daughter, Mary. At the age of fourteen, Sally escorted Mary to France where Sally became very much a part of French society. Upon returning, she also became the maid to Jefferson’s daughter, Martha. After the death of Thomas Jefferson, Sally stayed at Monticello, caring for Martha and her family. Financial hardships which fell on the Jefferson family prevented Sally from leaving Monticello.

A 50/50 raffle and free lunch raffle will follow the program. LCRTA welcomes retirees and interested members of the community who support public education. For more information on the organization, visit the website at https://lakecountyrta.weebly.com/.
